Ten tips to buying your new fountain or water feature

  1. If your buying a water feature or fountain, positioning is crucial to ensure low maintanance.
  2. Placing water features under trees can become high maintanance in autumn (falling leaves), so it is better to drain your water features and cover over with a protective cover for the winter months.
  3. Be aware that during the summer months water will evaporate and be used by birds to bathe and may require topping up occasionally.
  4. Regular water changes can increase the life of your fountain or water feature by reducing build up of algae.
  5. Most water features and fountains are supplied with pumps to suit, they usually have a cable length of 10m (if you are increasing the length of your cable seek advice from a qualified electrician on the correct way to do this).
  6. Before fitting your fountain or water feature ensure you have a solid stable base for your fountain to sit on.
  7. The best way to secure your fountain is to attach it to your base with silicone sealant, this ensures it is stuck down solid but if you need to remove it, it can be done easily by cutting through the silicone sealant with a knife.
  8. If your garden is open to high winds position your water features in a sheltered area from the wind to ensure the best fall of water from its spill points.
  9. Most water features are self contained which means it will have a reservoir in which the water is stored then pumped around the feature ending up back in the reservoir.
  10. If your purchasing a fountain or water feature for your garden follow these tips and you will enjoy your fountains for many years to come.
